Kenya’s socialist party, Social Democratic Party (SDP) has called for the resignation of Monica Juma as foreign affairs Cabinet Secretary following the debacle in Israel yesterday where the charge’d affairs at the Kenyan embassy attended the launch of US embassy in Jerusalem.
The move by US President Donald Trump to move his country’s embassy to Jerusalem has been condemned worldwide and is seen a tactic to undermine Palestinian people’s quest to free themselves from Israel colonisation.
President Uhuru Kenyatta has in the past promised that Kenya was ready to host a Palestinian Embassy in Nairobi and it had been expected that country’s embassy staff in Israel would keep of the US embassy opening in Jerusalem.
In a bold statement, SDP called Kenya’s presence at the opening “one of the lowest points of Kenya’s foreign policy under president Uhuru Kenyatta.”
“We therefore demand nothing short of a resignation from Cabinet Secretary in charge of Foreign Affairs, Mrs Monica Juma,” said the Marxist-Leninist party in the statement signed by Secretary General Benedict Wachira.
The party said the charge’d affairs’ presence at the opening had embarrassed Kenya and Kenyans.
“The regime has not only embarrassed Kenya and Kenyans, but it has reversed the gains that the country has made as an independent and responsible member of the global community,” said the party.
SDP called Uhuru to make an apology to the nation and offer an assurance that the same will never be repeated under his watch.
“This is the second time Kenya has failed to show solidarity with the oppressed people of Palestine with regards to the insane attacks on Palestine by US President Donald Trump,” said the party.
