Cooperative Bank has clarified that it is not one of the banks under Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) investigation for involvement in the alleged theft of Sh9 billion from National Youth Service.

Earlier this week, CBK governor Patrick Njoroge said the apex bank is investigating a number of banks which received funds from NYS on behalf of suppliers.

Although Njoroge did name the banks or how many they are, Daily Nation and its sister NTV ran a story yesterday which indicated the investigations had zeroed down on seven banks which include five top tier banks and two mid tier banks.

But in a statement signed by Group Head of Communication Ngumo Kahiga, Cooperative Bank said it was not under any investigations related to the scandal.

“We can confirm that we are not aware of any matter relating to the bank,” said the bank in the statement.

The bank said it had issued the statement following the story in the Daily Nation on the ongoing investigations on the NYS payments.
